Real Residents: Inside the Gates
A blog project designed to highlight the diversity of residents inside the gates of Big Canoe and educate potential home buyers on what life is like here.
Meet Mary Gutierrez. Mary and her family moved to Big Canoe, Georgia, in 2021. Margot Weatherford, owner of Sea to Summit Property Group and managing broker for eXp Realty at Big Canoe met with Mary to better understand how Big Canoe living is ideal for remote workers.

What area of Big Canoe do you live in, Mary?
Audobon Ridge
How long have you lived in Big Canoe?
We moved in the Spring of 2021
What made Big Canoe an ideal option for you and your family?
We were looking for a multi-generational option that would allow my parents to enjoy retirement and "age in place", while still providing enough room for me, my husband, and our two sons. When we started home shopping in North Georgia, we quickly realized that buying a home outside of an HOA Community could present risk of neighboring parcels being developed overtime. Big Canoe seemed to be a great option because of the privacy and guarantee that our neighbors would have some restrictions on how they could use their property. That gave us a peace of mind. We would exhale everytime we came through the gates.
What specifically did you look for in a home when considering remote options?
I've been working remotely for 12 years, and am presently a program manager for HR strategic priorities in pharma. When considering home options, some must have's for me were
- High-speed internet
- Home office space
- Underground utilities (perk of Big Canoe)
- The ability to Instacart
- Quiet and peaceful location
As someone who's worked remotely for over 10 years, what advice to you have for other remote workers ready to make a change in their living situation?
Think about what is important to you, and follow that calling. If you enjoy the outdoors, choose an area where you can access the outdoors easily. For me, Big Canoe provides that space. I can look out of my window while working and see all kinds of wildlife (bears, deer, birds). I can also take my computer and rent a pontoon boat for the afternoon.
